Please take this moment to laugh at my expense. It’s pretty funny but a teachable moment.

Just a quick story for those of you who might leave the truck running with the keys in your pocket or warm their trucks up in the morning

I got home from work about two weeks ago but I had to run back out to make a deal with a local guy. I left my truck running in the driveway and ran inside. I sat my keys down on the counter, loaded up my stuff, and took off.

Admittedly, I was on the phone letting him know I was on my way and obviously distracted by other stuff. I got about 15 minutes from the house and noticed “key fob has left the vehicle” warning on the dash. I immediately realized I left my keys on the counter. I kept driving, albeit somewhat nervous. I called my buddy and he said my truck would shut off 70ft from the fob. Well, that ain’t true.

I made it to my deal, left my truck running, and made it home with no issues. I have confirmed you can drive over 45 minutes without the key as long as you don’t shut the truck off.

learn from my dumbassery, your truck can be stolen if you start it and walk away. I always assumed when it says “key fob has left the vehicle” that it wouldn’t go in gear or get very far (we all have experienced auto-park, I’m sure) but that is not the case.

If you start your truck and leave it running, use the fob and lock the doors. This will remind you to not leave your keys and it could prevent it from being stolen.

Cheers.

I also learned the hard way i started my truck in +35*c weather (hottest day of the year) at work to let it cool down put my keys on my tool box at WORK changed my clothes got in my truck drove to the post office about a 15 min walk from my house and shut the truck off (i never turn it off when i get the mail ) then went for my mailbox key realized i dont have it.... it was a hot walk of shame home to get my spare key then walk back to the truck and go back to work to grab my keys.... now i keep my keys in my personal clothes and take the fob part of the key and put it in the truck so i wont forget my keys
