2019 Ram 2500 Tailgate Hinge Replacement

Ram Cares checked into recall, warranty side of problem which there wasn’t anything. I think they were willing to help set me up with a Ram affiliated body shop. I have been told to use silicone spray as it won’t degrade the plastic bushing and hold dirt like oil based lubricants. Hopefully you can catch it early enough to avoid the replacement expense.
I think mine is beyond spraying and repair but I’ll try again. Thank you for the response, much appreciated

Recently my Ram 2500 tailgate was not opening easily. It needs to be pulled down and is also very hard to close. Disconnected the damper and no difference. Appears that the hinge is froze up. Took the tailgate off and could only get hinge to rotate using a crow bar. Went to dealer and ordered replacement hinge. It is PN 68362260AC, tailgate reinforcement with hinge. Upon trying to install it is apparent that the original is part of the truck body-spot welded in. A body shop is required to replace this part. I’m being told $500 to $750. What a poor design. Anyone have this problem and a better replacement option?
I am at this place in time now. It won't move I am waiting for the local deal to call me back, that is from this morning .

Hi There, I also have a 2019 Ram 2500 which has the tailgate dampener on the right side of the tailgate. Mine has also gotten very stiff. The problem appears to be in the place where the shaft goes thru the hinge mount to the dampener control arm. I looked at unbolting the piece but now I see it is spot welded to the box. How do I go about replacing this?

Thanks

It's the same as any other gas strut. You have to release the C-clip.

You'll need to remove the taillight assembly to access the upper end of the strut.

There's tens of videos on youtube how to do this.

HI Brutal,
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately removing the gas strut is not my issue. I need to remove the hinge piece as it has frozen up. Unlike the 1500 rams, apparently they welded the 2500 hinge brackets in addition to the two bolts. I am hoping somone has a solution as I am not keen to have to drill out about 15 spot welds and reweld.

Thanks

Hey, I have the same issue over the last year it has gotten worse and worse to the point now I have to replace it... purchased the part but now that i have it in hand and seeing the amount of spotwelds holding the hole back end of the bed together I was wondering if anyone had any other options? I am contiplating just cutting out the section arounf the hinge and just replacing the hinge... the welding it back in that way... a little less chance of having body panel alignment issues once all those spot welds are out.
Pics are somewhat difficult to see what your working with but I did my best. One is from under the truck looking up to the opening where you can see the lower attachment point of the gas strut. Others are from above and one is of the new part.20240614_090227.jpg20240711_143814.jpg20240614_090201.jpg20240614_090144.jpg20240614_090148.jpg20240529_162141.jpg20240614_090211.jpg

I lubricated mine again yesterday. This time I removed the tail light and sprayed lube in that end also. I used Sea Foam Deep Creep as it migrates into every crevice. Hopefully preventive maintenance will avoid an expensive repair down the road.

Just to add to my post. Inside the tail lamp housing, there is a sleeve through which the rod that goes through a metal sleeve attached to the inside of the tailgate opening. It is part of a larger part spot welded into place. One end of the rod attaches to the tailgate hinge and the other to the bell crank for the gas strut. The sleeve is probably a good inch and a half long. It is the rod that seizes inside the sleeve that causes the issue. The only way to prevent this is to lubricate both ends of the sleeve. Tailgate end is easy but the other end involves removing the tail light. Don't worry about breaking one of the clips that attaches the outer edge of the tail lamp. You can get them on Amazon for about 35 cents each. I bought a bag of 20 for 7 dollars on Amazon. I replace both clips by sliding them into the tail lamp and by pushing the assempbly into place from the side. Not the same direction as removing it. Look at it and you will see how it goes in. I should have taken some photos. :( It is a 15 minute job so do it once a year and save yourself some headaches and a big expense.

Does anyone know if Ram is going to offer any help on these tailgate hinges?
This is insane how many of these are freezing up.
Or does anyone have another fix for it?

2019 ram 3500. My tailgate is doing the same thing. passenger side tailgate hinge. tried cleaning it with degreaser and spray lube. its a little better but it still will not come down on it own. any help or fix for this will be greatly appreciated. Thinking of heading to dealer and seeing what they say?

What i ended up doing was removing the taillight and drilled 2 holes on the top of that shaft and sprayed them with pb blaster. Then removed the tailgate and I used a breaker bar with a 6 inch half inch extension and worked it back n forth while lubricating the 2 holes. Opens easy now. If it starts getting tight I will spray it again. Hopefully ram gets an fix for this.
In a few weeks I might try to fabricate a hinge with a grease fitting.

thanks, can you send me a picture of where you drilled the holes?

When you drill it you only go about a 1/8" you will feel it when you hit the shaft. And BP blaster and used that extension where the taillight goes in. Just work it back and forth a little bit at a time while spraying it a little at a time.
I do have a plan on how to permanently fix this. Just gotta get the time.

What is the breaker bar and extension for?

Are you using it to pry on the part with the ball on it for the tailgate damper?
