Transfer case output seal orientation question

As many have already read, my truck has been at the dealer for an output seal and then again to a different dealer for the transfer case seal itself. I noted a small leak from the new output seal now that the case halves were resealed. My question is: is the pressure/weep hole, on the output seal, supposed to be at 6 o clock (bottom) which is where it is leaking from. I read that the hole on the seal should be somewhere between 10-2 o clock (upward toward floor pan). I suspect it should be upward and that this leak is only now presenting because the second dealer actually remedied the issue of the transfer case seal leak. The weep hole likely wasn’t leaking after the first dealer botched the job (by only replacing the output seal) as the transfer case was still steadily leaking at that time. Thanks in advance.

I’ve always been told to put the weep hole on the 6 o’clock position and never had a problem. Same for water pumps the have the weep hole on the bottom, if it leaks better to catch it early than to run dry? That my thinking.

Its not a weep hole its a pressure relief it does not matter where you put it as oil should not make it that far out past the seal lips, that just keeps the pressure between the wiper section and the actual sealing section of the seal assembly as your drive shaft moves in and out if the output on the t case.

If it is leaking after service they either knicked the seal( not likely) or they did not lube the seal before assembly and it ran dry before oil got to it and burnt out the seal.

thanks for that info, I would still recommend putting the pressure release breather hole on the 6 o’clock in case water gets in? I agree it should not have any oil out of the pressure release hole.

No it would not matter since the water cant get in think of it like when you pinch a straw and water wont go out of the straw when you lift it out of the drink
