Hey. I wanted to inquire. Can I use the following tire size on my Power Wagon 21?

40x13.5R20

Or will it rub everywhere?

For starters, yes. But I'm currently thinking about changing it. Unfortunately I can't decide and can't find a suitable solution.

Running more than 35’s and flexing a lot can rub. Some run 37s with a level. 40s is a big step up and require a bit of work. Check out the AEV prospector XL. Trucks with that type of suspension and body work can successfully run 40s off-road.

Sure 20s will work. 35x12.5x20 would work fine, even 37s maybe.. 20s are not the best off road ride as the small sidewall takes away from absorbing bumps. Most do 17 or 18s.

Yep, there's a reason the PW comes with 17" rims.
But you can go larger if you want. Just be aware that the ride will suffer as stated above.

I have to disagree with 20s off-road once you get a 40” or bigger tire on there, there’s plenty of sidewall the get comfort, sidewall forgiveness etc.. Plenty of Jeeps run 20s and 40s and bigger as it offers better tire choices.
40s however will not work on a stock PW. I ran 37s without issue with proper backspaced wheels
You’ll need 3-4” minimum to fit 40s on a PW

Ok thanks. I have a question. Which suspension is the best for the pw? Cause my stock bilstein are to hard for me. I will ride the 17s… but will change the suspension. I write carli and others. No one can tell me the best package…I will have softly ride on the road

We run 40s on 17 rims offroad on the race truck. A few have gone to 18s because of bigger brakes. But noone runs 20s.

I’m not running 40s but FWIW when I was thinking of jumping to 40s I was told I’d need to upgrade the steering box as well since the stock box wouldn’t last long having to push them around.

There was also a rabbit hole of ‘should also upgrade’ items: brakes, gearing, etc.

The shop has no problem taking my money so I don’t think they were trying to talk me out of anything, just being straight with me.

Might be looking at much more than a suspension kit by the time you’re done.

The thing is that it's a HD truck after all. With the weight of a HD truck. Meaning that the ride quality will never be comparable to a regular car or even a 1500.
That weight requires a certain spring stiffness to support it. The PW already has softer springs and dampers than a regular 2500, which results in less payload.
Going even softer will both reduce that and may impact the steering negatively.

For some reason people on here don’t understand a 40” tire mounted on a 20” wheel has the same sidewall as an 37” mounted on an 18” as most 40s run true to size vs most 37s.
When Jeeps slap 1 ton axles on and change to an 8x6.5 bolt pattern, several people have switched to 20s to get better tire options for the weight their Jeeps now are. Evo Manufacturing Jeeps use 20s all the time on their set ups without issue.

OP to answer your question, either Carli or Thuren will get you a better ride but you didn’t mention if hauling or towing is a concern. I’d suggest staying with a 38” or smaller for tires as you will want hydro assist steering with anything larger.

My plan is to buy the following tires. Winter (Toyo) 285/70/17 and summer (Toyo AT3) 315/70/17.

And I want more driving comfort.

I am completely dissatisfied with the standard Bilstein. The car is heavy and I suspect my shock absorbers are already broken. Mileage is currently 56k km

Now I need the right shock absorbers or suspension. My budget is up to $5k

PS. I don't drive anything heavy with my truck. Just my enduro bike and bicycles.

You do realize that those have different circumferences and thus your speedometer and odometer will be off one way or the other?

Why would you think that?

And for more driving comfort, you just need a 1500.

I just put Bilstein 5160 shocks on my Power Wagon that are tuned for Power Wagon suspension. I bought them from Suspension lifts out of Canada for around $1100 for all 4. They are remote res. shock. I certainly would never go over a 37 inch tire unless you could do a regear as you would loose so much power and put a lot of strain on the Transmission. No one really has replacement gear sets for the current Power Wagon. You can really soften the ride up by running lower air pressure in your tires. Try dropping the air to around 45 to 50 and see how the ride is. That should still handle the load rating of the truck but you would have a tire sensor light unless you get a procal snap from AEV.

You should sell it and buy a 1500.

It's not a car, it's a truck. You should sell it and buy a 1500.

You should sell it, and buy a 1500. You are going to dump a bunch of money into it, and still end up with ride quality that is not as good as a 1500.

Did you do zero research before you asked the question? Seems like you want to be spoon fed information.

Be an adult and search first. You would find out that AEV prospector XLs can run 40” no problem with 3” lift, cutout fenders and 1” front axle stretch.

Out of curiosity, how much does switching to a lower PSI tire like BFG KO2's soften the ride vs the Duratracs? 65-68PSI seemed nuts to me when I saw that, but I'm fine w/ the ride. Will go to 35's at some point (only have 3500 miles on it so far)m just curious how much of a change that PSI drop results in.
