So, as we wait on the new 4.5 Gen, I figured I would show the numbers for the 4th Gen.

I am going to start with just the 2500 trucks and we will see were that goes.

Ok, 2018 max payload is 3990 and max towing is 17980.

Now, as I have grown weary trying to explain this in the 1500 world of truck owners...you can not have max payload and max towing on the same truck.  You also can not have maximum payload and still have maximum towing.  You will have one or the other.  Max payload will take away from your trailer because you need tongue weight in there and it subtracts from GCWR. And if you are at max trailer the tongue weight takes away from your GVWR thus decreasing payload.

So, max payload.  You have to have a Regular cab 4x2 with the 6.4l Hemi.  It has a GVWR of 10000 lbs.  Either axle ratio gets you this.

And max trailer, you have to have a Regular cab 4x2 with the 6.7l Cummins and AUTOMATIC transmission It has a GCWR of 25300.

All Cummins trucks will have a GVWR of 10000lbs as do the 6.4l Hemi trucks.  The 5.7l Hemi only gets 9000.

Note: that the numbers for CNG trucks and Canadian trucks are different

Now GCWR will change with engine and rear gear ratio.

5.7l HEMI...3.73 is 18300
                    4.10 is 20300
6.4l HEMI...3.73 is 19800
                     4.10 is 22800
Cummins...3.42 is 24300 with 6speed manual
                     3.42 is 25300 with 6speed auto.

Those are the numbers and each trim will have a different actual number with each option.

That's our starting point

towing capacity of 35,100 lbs. and payload capacity of 7,680 lbs

There are the maximums. Remember, 2 completely different trucks get these numbers.

Devildodge,
You start spec’ing out your new truck yet? I know you’ve been waiting for this reveal.

Yes, I have. Unfortunately, the feature guide isn't out yet.

A Powerwagon is what I want, a Tradesman with Powerwagon package would be a compromise, but it will be a Tradesman(maybe Bighorn) Crew 8 foot bed...but man that Laramie Sport sure looks nice.

When looking at the towing chart, I see 4x2 towing capacity is higher than 4x4. If I have a truck that is 4x4 capable, but I only have it set to 4x2, does that mean my towing capacity is now at the 4x2 ratings? Or are the 4x2 ratings only applicable if your truck doesn't have the 4x4 option?
Thanks

If your truck is 4x4 you get the 4x4 rating whether you use the transfer case or not.

Guess, I never got back to this with the new numbers.

2500 has gained about 200 lbs payload and about 1700lbs more GCWR.

Remember also, the max tow rating on the 3500 is with a gooseneck. 5th wheel will be less and bumper pull even lower.

If I get some free time I plan to compare my 2015 to similar 2019. Or maybe I did that already...I took myself out of the payload argument for awhile, it was getting crazy with RAM 1500 trucks trying to haul 15,000 lbs 5th wheels lol.
