How difficult is it to remove/swap the RAM in the grille?

I’m debating switching my chrome RAM to the black version.
the letters have small tabs that are easy to break on the back of them so you’ll want good access to the back of the letters. FYI when I bought the black letters they were actually grey and the three letters were not even the same shade of grey so be prepared to still have to paint them. This was some years ago maybe they’re better now.

So what is the best way to access them?

Well, I broke mine. Don’t be like me. I found out the hard way that the tabs that break off are part of the grille and not part of the letters. My letters may or may not be on with adhesive now.

You *should* have pretty good access after you remove the big cover that goes all the way across the top. I have’t checked to see if you can get to the back of the letters that way but I think you would be able to. I had to access the area behind the grille a few times that way. Quite a few of the push pin style retainer clips hold it on. You would not be able to see what you were doing but I think you could reach the back of the lettering.

It’s a lot of work to remove the entire grille, but I’ve done that for other projects so that’s another option. That’s the way I would recommend but its an undertaking.

Or you could use masking tape and paint them in place

Thanks

That looks like a bunch of work to just change the color of my RAM emblem.

If I do it I’m sure I’ll use tape and paint.

You can order the R, A, M letters already paint matched. Pop the original ones out with a butter knife and pop the new ones in it’s not bad. The stock ones you will most likely break a tab but not a big deal since you would be replacing them anyway.

perhaps a difference in the grille styles or years because the tabs broke off of my grille and not off the letters.

The back of the letters had barbed spears that click into holes/tabs on the grille.

Breaking the letters would be ok, breaking the grille sucks. That’s why I had to use adhesive on my letters as mentioned

Ohh I got ya now, I hadn’t thought of that scenario.
