No. Payload isn’t + anything.

payload is how much s**t you can load into the naked truck before you hit GVWR of 10k (or whatever your gvwr is)

Yourself, beans, tow straps, *****, winches, the family pet, all of it.
Guessing you could get out of just about any weight ticket if your ****** put you over the limit

At least now there is some performance standard for the tow ratings. Prior to 2015 they just pulled them out of the air.

Your door sticker does not include a 150lb driver.

Your door sticker is GVWR minus base weight.

Base weight is an empty truck with full fluids.

The 150lb allowance is for determining max tow.

Actually...it is now 300lbs for driver/passenger.

If you look at the deception of the max tow number...you will see that it is the difference from GCWR to base weight. So that max tow isnt a max trailer weight. It is everything added to the base weight of a truck up to GCWR.

This would be passengers, cargo, hitch system, tongue weight and trailer.

The allowance changes depending on where you get the info.

I have found for a 1500. The give no allowance in the number.

On the charts...the allowance is 470lbs. This is because the charts are a tradesman trim. The 470 is 300 for driver/passenger 33% for options (100 pounds) and then the hitch...which is 75for conventional, 250 for 5th wheel and 70 for gooseneck.

For instance. A TRADESMAN with Powerwagon package on top and my truck on the bottom

Powerwagon GVWR is 8565 and GCWR is 18000

My truck GVWR is 10000 and GCWR is 19800

Powerwagon 8565 minus 1417 is a base weight of 7148

My truck 10000 minus 2998 is base weight of 7002

Powerwagon 18000 minus 7148 is 10852

My truck 19800 minus 7002 is 12798

Can you see it now.

That 12798 is with a driverless truck and no hitch.

So my truck can not tow a 12798 pound trailer.

I hope this makes sense. If not...i can pull out my crayons. :p

This is why you need rain boots and an umbrella at the 5th Gen 1500 site. They see this max tow number...think it is max trailer and bam they are on wondering why their truck sags so much and won't stop coming down the mountain.

Us HeftyDuty guys are a bit better off as we do have more extra capacity.

Good times.

One must really pay attention to what they are believing

Why does that 21 have such a low payload? Same motor and config as mine but my ‘19 has almost 3200# payload

Yeah, those are always fun threads over there...They also believe that the manufacturer stated tongue weight is what it will be when they bring it home from the dealer... HA!
I upgraded trucks for multiple reasons, I was close to payload limit but not over yet and wanted some extra room to take a generator and other things with us. Plus, knowing we would need the 2500 eventually anyways, I figured it was a good time to get out of the 1500 while trade-in values were still high. Though it looks like those values will continue to be high a little longer with the chip shortages going on.

It is a tradesman with powerwagon package.

I am starting my search and planning my purchase of one.

I explained the difference in the post. Tradesman with Powerwagon was the top image and my truck the bottom.

I then gave the 8565 GVWR for the tradesman with powerwagon package anf the 10k for mine

anything past 3500lbs needs trailer brakes legally so the trailer brakes would stop the trailer if the brake controller is set properly so braking is no issue....
Here in PA it is anything over 2000 pounds. And I believe RAM STATES anything over 1500 they are recommended.

The issue is...they read 11980lb towing capacity. They load the truck to 7700lbs then get a 11000lb trailer. Now the truck takes the tongue weight. And bam they are at 19800lbs GCWR...because they read on the internet they can exceed payload and they can tow 12k.

Ah forget it. This always frustrates me. Atleast here people have capacity...good times
