Looking at used 2500 gasser which was a fleet truck, took it on a test drive and it seemed to shift a bit rough compared the 8 speed I test rode. Sits at 90k miles.

Am I signing myself up for problems with the 66RFE transmission? Having to pay 5k on a rebuild makes any savings on the used fleet truck pointless and I have read a lot of things on tranys going out at 90k miles.

Usually reliable, yes. Beat on like a rental or not properly maintained, it’s destined for failure.

I have a 2018 in the shop now for a new transmission at 74k miles. I'd avoid.

Particularly since Ram can't tell me when they can actually get a replacement.

Mine went into limp mode around 60K and was already done for. ( Warranty? Your funny! :D ) Rebuilt it around 110K I think but I had to coast into the shop. I call it the vat of lead or VOL series. After your rebuild it probably wont work very well, but it will last however. They used some VERY cheap parts, and a good shop will upgrade those. Its also not great for towing, particularly on hills going up. Down, not too bad. But the gear ratios are bad and some have identified hard grade towing as a real killer. Just for the fantastic ZF and front locker that does not require a 3,000.00 overide box,(PW) stick with 2019 and newer. Add to that a somewhat less damaging exhaust manifold program.
