McDonalds didn’t sell iced coffee in 1992. The woman was 79 and the coffee was hot enough (180 degrees) to cause 3rd degree burns in seconds, requiring skin grafts. There had been over 700 hundred people injured at this point, she was just the first to push to trial. The company admitted during trial to knowing there was an issue for over 10 years, but they didn’t want to spend money on fixing the manuals that told the restaurants what temperature to set their machines to. The main effect of the lawsuit was not that they added “hot” labels to their cups, it was that they reduced the temperature of their coffee to a level that was less likely to seriously injure people.

spilled molten-hot coffee on herself. Sure, somebody had to pay rather than Medicare. More than 699 people didn’t go to trial?..holy poop.
