Had my oil changed at the dealer this am, two knee replacements and my desire to climb under the truck has diminished.... Anyway, today I had the oil changed in my 2008 CTD with Rotella 15-40 and MOPAR filter for $116 USD. I had called the dealer last week to inquire on the price of an oil change with Rotella 10-30 and MOPAR filter for my 2024 CTD. I was quoted $175.95.

The Service Writer tried to tell me the $60 USD cost differential was due to the different oil and filter costs. BS.

'usd.

Why would you say that?

I'm not looking for your sympathy or am I complaining. I just stated a fact that if you have a new truck,, repairs appear to cost more for the same job.

$175 is a lot better than what my dealer tried to charge me. For an oil change and tire rotation they tried to charge me around $250 bucks. I had given them a mopar coupon 2 for $130 up to 6 quarts and a mopar tire rotation coupon. They denied the coupon because my truck takes 7 quarts and said they forgot to apply the tire rotation coupon. I had them read the fine print on the coupon and to charge me the $130 and for another quart. Then they tried to tell me the coupon was only for a Diesel. Again, I had them read the fine print on the coupon and to stop with the scam because I am not stupid. Everyone laughed at the service manager when he asked me if my Power Wagon was a diesel and I asked him if he was smoking crack. The manager finally told them to take care of it and got my $65 oil change, credit for the second one, and they did not charge me for the 7th quart. No telling how many people they have taken advantage of. It was a disappointing experience because for small warranty work they had gone above and beyond.

I remember a tire rotation was $95 at my dealer this am on their price board. The $175 oil change was for a diesel as well, a little more oil. So added together, about the same you were originally quoted.

Oil changes used to be a loss leader to build customer loyalty.

Different oil, plus costs have increased. You are lucky the dealer here charges 590$+ tax CAD to do the oil and the 2 fuel filters!

$175 isn't bad for a dealer oil change on a cummins.

...andvyah, prices have been up for quite some time, across commodities.

Actually, what you stated most sensationally was, "Dealer Screws New Truck Owners."

Do you know what the cost for those materials and labor are?

Fact is, the new trucks are a little harder to change the oil filter, so it's not the same job as the 08. My 04 was much easier to change the oil than the 20.

Dealers may also charge more based on the model year as their liability risk is higher if they break it.

$175 for a full service oil change on a modern diesel is not unrealistic, out of line, or "screwing" the customer. In fact, based on a little research, it would appear to be a good deal. They probably checked/filled your fluids and tires and gave it the old 'safety check."

T4 15W-40 they likely put in your 08 is less expensive than either T5 or T6 10W-30. The filter is $28 MSRP.

My last DIY oil change was $90 oil (could be as low as $75) and the Fleetguard filter $20 (avg cost incl shipping from Genos). That's $110 cost, about average.

We've seen folks quoted upwards of $400 for oil only $800 with fuel filters. THAT'S an unscrupulous dealer worth complaining about.

The average cost for a Dodge Ram 2500 Oil Change is between $179 and $203. Labor costs are estimated between $31 and $39 while parts are priced between $148 and $164. This range does not include taxes and fees, and does not factor in your unique location. Related repairs may also be needed.

i find my 19 is easier to change the filter than the 05 the 19 i just reach in the fender spin off the filter and put the new one on

Last time I checked Brampton Chrysler was charging just for the parts $200 for the oil, $220 for the 2 fuel filters and $20 for the oil filter....The math is $440 before taxes and labour.

I could get to the filter on the 04 from the bottom and pull it out and back in that way. Can't do that on the 20 and I bought that screw in topper dodad to keep from spilling oil.

Don’t waste your time with the clowns at the dealer. Take it to a local Indy shop. Straight quality filter and oil is probably gonna push $80-90. So $175 isn’t out of line for a dealer. Get an oil valve and save yourself 85 and it’s easier than getting the wrench set out

What indy shop going to get 3gal of oil and a filter and pay their guy in the shop for less than the cost of the oil…. Unless they are putting in garbage oil and a garbage filter.
