Aux tank in spare tire space

My 2024 2500 rebel diesel is on 37s so spare is out. So I’m putting a titan aux tank in there. I’m honestly kind of bummed that they controller only allows 5gal transfers at a time at a pretty slow rate.

I’ve been in touch with titan and they advised -
“The biggest reason we only do 5 gallons each time is because if the flow is any faster, your truck’s system could potentially see that as an engine problem, and it would go into “limp mode”. This happens more often with Fords but has been known to happen with RAM trucks as well. By keeping the flow at about 2 gallons per minute for a total of 10 minutes, we can ensure that the truck’s sensors won’t kick off any potential alarms.”

So I wonder has anyone seen such alarms with other tanks like transferflow or gravity fed? If not I’ll write the pump top one of the aux switches instead

This was a thing with the duramax trucks too. The ecm liked to see movement in the sending unit - up or down. If the signal didn't change for a long period (because it was stuck to the top of the tank due to a gravity feed) then it would figure the sending unit was bad. It would send the fuel gauge to E and give you a check engine light.

Titan probably also does this (slow rate transfer) to keep from over pressurizing against the vent valve once you fill the main tank.

Also, 2 gpm for 10 min is 20 gal, not 5.

I have a Titan 50 gallon tank in my truck and there is about 8 gallons of diesel above the top of the fuel level float. I have gone over 2 hours driving freeway without the needle moving and had no faults on mine.

I have the 52 gallon replacement Titan so not sure if really relevant to your question. But, FWIW, I go 2 hours+ before my fuel gauge needle starts to move. I always assumed that the needle starts moving at about the same point as the smaller OEM tank would have been full. Maybe not but I think I go through at least 10 to 12 gallons or more before the needle moves.

Thanks everyone! I’ll look into writing it just to the aux switch then.
Is everyone happy with their Titan tanks otherwise?

Yes so far. The only thing with my OEM replacement was right after install I noticed the side of the tank was touching the fuel filter. Fortunately when I loosened the bolts holding on the filter, there was enough play to slide the filter over about 1/2". So no longer touching and several filter changes since so plenty of room to maneuver the filters off and on.

Thanks for this! I'll make sure to check the spacing between the fuel filter and the tank.
My install is next week - i'm stoked for having 80+ gallons of fuel available to me!
