Wife is using our new 2022 2500 Longhorn, she called me and said roads are somewhat icey in spots and the 2500 doesn't have auto 4wd so she is in 4wd, she is going 200 miles, I told her to go to 2wd when roads look dry, how far before there is a issue running 4wd on dry roads?

She’s not going to break anything, but on dry roads, the steering will feel like it’s binding the tighter you turn. I wouldn’t make a habit of using it on dryish roads

In my manual it states 55mph as maximum safe speed in 4 high regardless of road conditions. Hopefully she's not going faster than that with icy patches in the road.

i've been running trucks in 4wd at 65+ mph for the last 10 years, never had a problem.

As have I, on good packed snow. But on patchy ice as OP describes, no thanks. Just not in that big of a hurry.

same here. I've left mine in 4wd for weeks at a time. been over 55mph no telling how many times over the years, the '19 included. don't engage 4wd over 55mph.

have her keep it in 4wd until the roads clear. steering will feel tight and minimize sharp turns on the dry.

Auto 4x4 is useless it does not engage until your already spinning im glad we dont have it….. just turn 4x4 off when your in a parking lot doing tight turns it will be fine

I think that is the Max speed to engage 4wd

55 is the max speed for shifting into or out of 4 high. There is no max speed for driving in 4 high.
This was my understanding as well. I've run in 4wd frequently at 65 with no problems at all. I do switch back into 2wd if any kind of turning on dryish pavement is needed. Don't like that binding feeling....

If you are on the interstate with a posted speed limit of 70 mph and you decide you feel uncomfortable with rainy slick roads.

You can shift into 4wd. Lift off the accelerator select 4wd High and the truck will shift.

I have never seen a manual say 55 is the allowed maximum speed for 4wd or the maximum speed for engagement.

Would sure love to see it if there is.

Common sense says if the road conditions are needed for 4wd, you should slow down...but watch the videos of them torture testing the PowerWagon....you would be interested to see how fast the 8 speed transmission allows you to go in 4wd low even.

Would enjoy seeing the manual excerpt

It appears to only apply to the manually shifted transfer case in the current HDs, not the electronically shifted one. It’s been the in the manual for every Jeep I’ve owned, so I assumed it would carry over here as well.

Thanks. Good stuff. Never not once ever saw that.

Will not change my procedure though.
