2023 Trailer Towing Cameras & Surround Cameras - Available or Not? And how to order a config that will work...

On my 2023, I took the trailer camera system from a 2022 and replaced the camera with the 2023 CHMSL (3rd brake light) camera. Unfortunately the system doesn't recognize this camera connected to the trailer input. I was able to reroute the trailer wiring to the CHMSL input and that worked. So the truck is still getting video from the CHMSL camera, it just happens to be mounted to the back of my trailer. Since the video is coming from the CHMSL input and not the trailer, I don't get the view tilt down on reverse, nor am I able to show the "trailer" camera and side view cameras simultaneously.

I put almost 10,000 miles on this trailer camera setup over the summer. It worked flawlessly. Picture quality was great and never experienced any drop-outs.

The video connections are under the driver's seat and can be switched back and forth in less than a minute without tools. When I initially did this, the CHMSL cameras weren't available to order yet. Since then, I have ordered one and plan to install both and just manually switch back and forth for the 3-4 times a year I go on a trip with my camper.

I'm hoping this is just temporary until there's a solution that uses the trailer input. If I can't figure out a way to do that, and the manual switching gets annoying enough, I may design a board to automatically switch back and forth whenever the trailer camera is connected.

I wonder if I could just order the entire '22 setup (DRVM, CHMSL, and trailer cam) and use than on my 23. I get the feeling the '23 camera is never going to come out.

I originally added the first gen DRVM to my 4th gen then got the 2.0 version and now got the 3.0. One thing to note for people that have the 3.0 system, it is not as simple as plugging in the side cameras to get the side views. Thanks to @CortexM0 for sending me LIN bus logs to figure out why my 3.0 setup was only showing a CHMSL view without the option of changing views. Using his config, I can get the mirror to switch views where as my prior 1.0/2.0 config did not. I have a pretty good idea on which messages they are now. Having said that, I kind of want to mess with sending other params to see if it changes the available camera views. Who knows, maybe there is a setting to have triple view with the CHMSL.

So for people that want to add the side cameras to their trucks, it will need a BCM settings change. I am not sure what that setting is as of yet though as I am doing this on a 4th gen with a separate module to generate the LIN nus messages for the mirror.

Someone here HAS to have a friendly dealer service manager that can escalate this to FCA about how to order a warranty replacement camera. We should just need to give them a VIN of one of the trucks that has it on their build sheet.

This is the first I've seen of any sort of availability of the 2023+ wired tow-mode camera, and I expect they'll sale fast. But currently on eBay there are three two one (now none) of the 68586112AA wired tow-mode camera systems for sale. He currently has them listed at $450, but offered them to me at $420. I'm not affiliated with the seller, and the usual eBay cautions apply.

I already received mine. From what I can tell, it looks brand new. I tested it on my 2023 limited. No special configuration required. Just plugged it in and the mirror automatically recognized it.

I have a 23 Ram 2500 Laramie, without the tow-mode rearview mirror. I do have the 12 inch Uconnect 5 with Aux 1 and Aux 2 as options.

They listed it at $1595 which is ridiculous!!! I saw one on ebay for $800 which is still expensive IMO, but I'm interested if anyone has tried it on a '23.

My dealer also said it was not returnable. $800 to $1600 is kind of a pricey gamble; especially for only 1 camera (the descriptions for "AB" and "AD" both say that you need to buy two kits if you want dual cameras).

Jimmy007 provided some very helpful info regarding 82216068AB on another thread (https://hdrams.com/forum/index.php?conversations/2023-tow-mode-camera.9381/#convMessage-60013). He confirmed that 82216068AB is NOT what I want. It displays a non-continuous, lower quality analog image on the in-dash display using the 12-pin connector. I'm interested in 68586112AA which uses the plug on the left side of my license plate. This is a high quality digital signal which displays the video continuously on the digital rear view mirror.

I learned from @Jimmy07 these are essentially the same. 82216421AB-001 is the old p/n before it was replaced by 68527709AC which is the new p/n.
