CAT Scale Weigh-in Heavier Than Curb Weight?

My 2021 2500 Laramie CCSB has a curb weight of 7,989, with a payload of 2011. Did a CAT scale today and she's showing heavy. I filled the 31g tank and had my wife and I in the cab, me at 210 and her at 110. Only after market addition so far is a tonneau cover. How am I at 8,500? Anyone else showing heavy on the scales? My payload is down to 1,500 and not too thrilled about it.

Because the curb weight is the weight of the vehicle as built, without you, the wife, or a tonneau cover.

When I weigh mine I get out of the truck. everything adds up. I like to say I weigh 200 lbs but realistically when I step on the scale the dang thing tells me dressed and ready to go I am 230 :) and no way will my wife let me see what she really weighs :).

8500 minus 210 and 110 is 8180lbs.

8180 minus 7989 is 191lbs. So I am guessing you had other stuff in the truck or you have a really heavy bed cover. Or your bathroom scale is off.

Also the scale has a +/- 40 lbs per pad. So it could technically be + 40 on each...which would be 80 over

8500 sounds right to me

I have a few things in the storage area under the back seat, a few tools, tow ropes, ratchet straps, I guess that could add up to 80 or so. Thanks for the guidance.

Exactly. Payload disappears quickly when you actually start doing the math.
No kidding....really didn't want to go 3500 as the 2500 rides better as a daily driver. I will have to make some adjustments in my auxiliary tank and TT plans.

Hit the nail on the head. The axles, frame, motor/trans combo on your truck is MORE than capable. It's the "soft" suspension that makes up the bulk of the difference between the 2 trucks.

My 2016 2500 with rear coils was not very confidence inspiring pulling our 14k loaded 5th wheel. Had plenty of power and stopped fine, but the softer suspension really makes you feel the weight of the load youre pulling once youre over, say, 10k lbs.

Yes. 20 lb increments.
Error allowance is ±/- 40 lbs per pad. Which is what I mentioned in the quoted Post. But now I can not find where I found that...I have hundreds of posts about CAT scale tickets.Screenshot_20200526-084249_2.png

The variance of our scales is established in the National Institute of Standards and Technology Handbook 44 Table 6. Class IIIL scales are allowed one division, or a 20 pound variance off zero for each 10,000 pounds of weight applied.

Most calibration tests preformed by either the State Weights and Measures or a licensed scale service company will use a minimum of 20,000 of certified test weights. In the case of a 20,000 pound test, anything beyond a 40 pound error in reading would be a failed test."

Maybe I combined the reading of something. This was all I could find. Lol. But I originally got the info from a friend who tows travel trailers for a living.

Cool how I got rounded to 00's. Makes my OCD happy and my inner conspiracy theorist think the scales are wrong because.....gov-mint.
