What did you do TO your RAM today?

I purchased a Heavy duty recovery shackle set up for my Reese today . 1 1/4 inch shackle and solid steel shaft into receiver . After reading the story about the fatality during recovery I went straight out and got a good one at Tractor Supply.

Tell us more! Where'd ya get it, what ya powering with it?
I purchased the NH Overland battery mount from CJC Offroad. I am also using a REDARC bcdc battery charger to connect the batteries together. I definitely oversized the wiring with 4 awg wiring. I also have all of my auxiliary lights and a inverter to run my 40L fridge for camping on the weekends. That way it does not affect my starting battery in any way.

Nice, but not needed. As I pointed out in the video, the soft shackle, rated at 42k lbs, was wrapped through both breakaway attachments and around the hitch. My gear is anchored by far more metal than a 5/8" hitch pin rated at 12,500lbs.

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest point, and the weakest point of most receiver hitch accessories is the hitch pin. The typical Walmart hitch pin is rated at 10,500lbs.
I have taken a recovery and winching course put on by The Driving Company - who trains firefighters, military and LEO working off road. They recover 30,000 fire rigs.

Soft shackles aren't recommended to be put on anything that is not meant for a soft shackle. The sharp edges on the chain mounts are meant for metal, not soft shackles. The sharp edges drop the WLL (working load limit) due to the stress focused on fibers and possible tearing of those fibers. You are likely referring to the MBS (minimum breaking strength) rating of 42k. So the WLL is typically 1/4th to 1/5th of that of the MBS. The hitch pin is also not designed for this load. Hitch pins are designed for strength at the two points it holds the hitch in. Not for a soft shackle in the middle.

Am I being OCD about this? Yes. But there's a reason why so many people injure themselves and kill themselves every year recovering vehicles with their off road truck or SUV. Probably more deaths/injuries by improper recovery per year than bear attacks.

I just wanted to add info for people to know that the correctly taught way is to not use soft shackles in that location. Probably is fine, like in your case.

Yankum and factor 55 are top tier.

Tactical recovery equipment seems to be a more budget friendly brand. I have their winch line on one rig and winch extension rope and a handful of soft shackles.
