Unplugging The EGR Valve

I’ve noticed, like others a tick at high idle predominantly coming from the passenger side. I listened to it with the hood up and it sounds like it’s coming from the EGR valve. So my question(s) is for those that may know better than I, if I unplug the EGR valve while my truck is running at high idle to test my theory, will the EGR cease to function while it is unplugged (eliminating the noise if my theory is correct) and will I cause any damage running with it unplugged? Also, will I need just to unplug the connection going into the EGR valve itself or is there other stuff to unplug to make it not work? I’m sure I’ll get a check engine light but I plan on clearing that out with my scanner.

Main EGR valve is on the passenger side up top yes unplugging it will cause it not to function and close the valve unplug it with the truck off then it will be off.

The EGR is on the drivers side?
Yes and no, there is a valve on the top of the intake horn but the main valve is the driverside one with the cable and actuator. Basically there is one on the “hot” side and one on the “cold” side. They also use the throttle valve below the intake horn to moderate the EGR usage.

Did you do this yet? Verdict? I had my truck in high idle the other day and my tick was gone (probably temporarily). It’s been over 3k miles since last oil change and the tick has remained until now (I know some have said the tick will go away several hundred miles after changing the oil which I thought was strange). The only difference was I changed the fuel filters on Monday. I can’t imagine that would have any factor in this but just putting that info out there. I’m curious to see if you’ve figured anything out.

^^^^^ Inquiring minds gotta know.

Agree still curious. Oh, and my tick is back. Weird I know, but it was completely gone for a while.
Mine ticks, rattles and makes all kinds of noises but it’s still running fine. It’s completely quiet at idle or even high idle. It seems like mine has a little more noise to it when cranking it hot but I figure that has to do with the injection timing.

My truck can sit for 3-5 days and when you start it up you hear nothing, yet I can drive it 1.5 miles shut it off for a 3-5 minutes at the coffee shop, then when you start it again ya can hear a light tick tick tick, my ticking is not as loud now as I switched back to 5w40 from 10w30, both oils I used were Amsoil best synthetic......

One of these days somebody is going to figure out this damn ticky-tick.

What really annoys me is that someone (or more like a lot of people) at Cummins Inc know what this is, but for some reason nobody else does.

Sorry fellas, I haven’t yet had the time to mess with my truck. I do however intend to follow through, I’ll post back and I’ll grab a before and after video of it. @24Megacab, last weekend I noticed the same thing, I was in a drive through and threw it in high idle and didn’t hear the noise. I did end up buying a mechanic stethoscope and poked around a bit and it was definitely not coming from the block that I could tell, almost sounded like it was coming more from the front of the motor, of course it was running and I wasn’t about to stick my hand in there just to listen for a noise! To be continued…..

I had a very similar tick. Mine has been at the dealer for over 30 days now. After the smashed push rods and rockers were replaced the noise was still there. Now the cam is coming out. Mine is also a 2023 with 14k of gentle miles.

Thanks for the update

Well even after dealer did the alignment of AC unit and stuff I still had the typewriter tick, it has quieted down some after i switched back from 10w30 to 5w40 ( I never had the ticking until about 300 miles after installing synthetic 10w30) Dealer claims nothing to worry about so I will find out come Friday afternoon as the truck will see a 14.5 day's road trip empty to Yellowstone, then the Badlands of SD then down to KC then over to Moab UT, up to SLC then back to the PDX area, its first lag of the trip is just over 12 hours with one fuel stop planed for Post falls ID then on to Livingston MT...

The cam actually only had one light mark on it on one of the rear cylinder lobes. Couldn't even feel it with a scribe or fingernail.

While I think the tick is odd, I’m under the impression that “some” are not detrimental as mine is not always present. I’m done chasing dragons but always like to hear any info about “ticks”.
