2022 Ram Tow/Trailer Camera Options

So riddle me this, in there infinant wisdom did Ram change to tow mode camera system from 2022 to 20024?

I have a 22 that I got with the camera and installed on my 5ver camper, had to extend the cable but it works most of the time.

Dad just got a 24 and it came with a camera by mistake so figured I would put it on the enclosed car hauler. First thing I noticed is that it has a two piece cable with a repeater in-between, and longer cable. I believe my 22 was all one piece and no repeater.

Well now that it installed the new 24 camera will not work on my 22 truck. And my 22 camera will not work on his 24 truck.
 
Yes, they did change it. I think in 23, but could have been 24. They are not compatible with each other....
 
It changed in 23 along with the DRVM 3.0. They added a repeater so the trailer can be longer. I'm sure they could have made it backwards compatible but chose not to.

Well that is just wonderful of them. It is hard to believe just how little these company think about their existing customers and how they actually use their products now days. I'll be most of these engineers designing this stuff haven't even pulled a trailer before, LOL

Obviously the mirror is redundant which is probably why you can have one or the other, but the Tow Technology Plus Group has no mention if it comes with the wired tow mode camera or not. I have attached my build sheet and the code XH7 is not there which from what I have gathered is what gives you the actual camera. According to the info on the Trailer Towing Technology Group (not the Plus), which includes Trailer Reverse Guidance it says “a loose shipped rear view camera is also available for upfit installation“. The big question is what does “available” mean? Does it mean included or just that it can be purchased separately? When I placed the order with the dealer I didn’t even think to ask because I assumed it would be included but now I’m not sure at all. I guess I’ll find out in a couple months when I can take delivery of the truck. Of course I’m sure it will be impossible to obtain one if it isn’t included.

They changed OEM suppliers. The protocols used are proprietary.
 
Does anyone know the Mopar part number for the 2023+ tow mode camera? My local dealer gave me the part number 82216068AD but I wasn’t sure I was communicating with him very well.

I have a 2023 2500 and my dealer also gave me p/n 82216068AB for the tow mode camera which Mopar lists as "Rear View Camera w/ Trailer Kit" at $1595! I learned from some very knowledgeable forum members including @Jimmy07 that the correct p/n is 68586112AA Digital Rear View Camera Kit also referred to as Tow Mode Camera. Unfortunately, this p/n has been discontinued and is very hard to fine now, but they do pop up occasionally on eBay typically for $400 - $600. You can set up an alert on eBay to be notified when one posts. Grab it ASAP as they go fast...

Thanks. Found a stellantis document that shows you are correct on the part number. The fact that it’s discontinued stinks. My understanding (perhaps not correct) is that this is a digital camera designed to work with the mirror and there are no aftermarket solutions?

Unfortunately, that is my understanding as well.
 
To be honest, I’ve read many of the 47 pages on this thread but not all. So if the answer to this question has already been addressed, I apologize. Since the tow camera kit 68586112AA isn’t available from Mopar, does anyone now if it’s possible to buy a replacement camera for the digital mirror and rig it so that it works with the towing coax input?

It did not come with the truck. I got the surround view camera set but not the tow mode camera which really sucks. I did find part number 68586112AA online at moparpartsonline.com for $566 but I’m leary to buy it for fear it may not be compatible with my 2024 model. The description online doesn’t mention a model year.

Here’s the schematic for the digital rear view mirror with tow mode camera. If you were to order a truck that only has the digital rear view mirror, and no tow mode camera, I’m not sure if the wiring for the tow mode camera will be on the truck, and if so, how many sections would be populated. If I had to guess, the headliner sections would be populated, but not the section that includes the bumper connector.

So I just stopped in at my local Ram dealer and showed them the Stellantis document that lists 68586112AA as the part number for the trailer tow camera. The parts counter guy said they are back ordered, not discontinued. He said that there were six total on back order nationwide. I could order one with the following conditions: the price is $835. I would have to pay in advance. It is non refundable no matter how long it takes to come in. I opted to wait on this one.

I went ahead and ordered one from moparonlineparts.com for $566. It is on backorder until the end of August so it probably really depends on when the manufacturer gets them out.

That’s a hard pass on that business model for me

Did they charge your credit card immediately or won’t until it ships? If they charged you for it already, Can you get a refund from moparonlineparts if say after a longer than expected wait period they still haven’t shipped it?

They did charge my credit card. I haven’t researched if I could cancel it if I want. As long as it comes in by the end of Aug I will be happy, but we will see what the real wait time is.
