Expected MPG: 6.4/3.73

Update on MPG - I was feeling pretty good about possibly increasing my mpg over time based on the truck’s computer display. A positive of the COVID in my area is there’s a lot less traffic on the roadway so not as much stop and go to get to work. The EVIC showed me increasing to 14.1 average on the trip meter for total miles driven. The current average was showing 13.9.

I drove it until the fuel light came on and my distance to empty was reading 25 miles... The hand calculation was 345 miles driven burning 26.9 gallons = 12.8 MPG ... ouch...
Mine seems to read more optimistic than not.

No idea what algorithm they use but I've found most EVICs are generally optimistic by 1-2 mpg... I ignore them entirely

I agree, it definitely seems to be the case here. Not only is the average off with MPG but the DTE is too. Separate but related issue - Adding all the data up, still nothing adds up to a 31 gallon tank.

DTE is off for sure. Mine was saying 30 miles with an average MPG of 15 and I put in 25 gallons. I figured it would be 28-29. My Ford was much more accurate.

my toyotas were so close i stopped hand cal ... the 1500 Ram is +/ - 0.2 mpg ... the 2500 is =/- 0.9 mpg ... i think the problem is the 2500 uses way more gas while idling than it thinks it is using, cause the more i idle the farther off it is

That‘s a great observation and I think probably accurate in my case too. I also have a 2019 1500 and share your opinion on it’s accuracy. I have noticed that the mileage on my 2500 drops on the EVIC fairly quick when it idles, it’s probably dropping more than I thought.

My 2019 1500 was also consistently off by 1-2 mpg...

I towed a 16ft low boy 150 miles yesterday loaded with boxes and furniture. Bed had dolly, spare trailer tire and some other items. 4 grown adults in the cab and one 8 year old. Mostly flat, cruise set at 63 and I was getting 18 mpg with a/c off and tow mode on.

On the way home empty trailer, same passengers cruise set on 72, no tow mode no a/c, getting 19 - 20 mpg.

So much better than my triton F150 V8. I'll take this all day long. All stock by the way.

That makes no sense at all. I would have to trailer my 6.4 gasser to get 18 MPG empty. Something is not right there....

Sorry just realized the thread title was for the gasser. I have the 6.7 diesel not the 6.4 gasser.

?? This was the readout from the computer on the dash, and this is the diesel not the gasser. What doesn't make sense?
I filled up this morning with no load and drove 6 miles home. Average was 20 and current was bouncing between 21 and 22.

Since this section is for the 6.4 gasser, I don't think anyone would have assumed you were talking about a diesel. I was as skeptical as lary was.

Glad to know the diesel does that well.

Just because the diesel is getting 'better' mileage does not mean it is cheaper to operate.
I ran the numbers for me and between the higher cost of fuel, additional cost of DEF, and the premium price of the engine, the 6.4 was the better choice for me (even at reduced mileage when towing).

Not to mention the high cost of having any problem having to do with emissions out of warranty, like a particulate filter. The way I look at it is, if you tow something much over 10K pounds, you should probably look at at diesel and be prepared to absorb the costs. If you tow a huge amount a diesel is probably worth it too. How you define "huge" I am not sure, but I would consider a diesel if I towed more than 10K miles per year, year after year of virtually any sized trailer over 5K pounds. If you live in a high wind area it probably wouldn't be a bad idea too. One of the worst trailer hauls I have ever experienced was crossing Saskatchewan in high winds. That is apparently a regular occurrence.

I would only consider a diesel if I normally towed over 10K pounds and over 10K miles a year... and aside from emissions issues, any type of engine work is more easily done on a gasser and there is also no need to worry about finding fuel or worrying about if the diesel is 'fresh'...

Certainly not bashing diesels...they certainly have a place but at the current time, they are not for me.

Same here

Just drove from Florida to Wisconsin.
Best mileage @75mph was 16.3mpg
Worst mileage @80mph was 14.9mpg

Cruise Control still can't hold a steady speed on a flat level road, constantly accelerating and decelerating.
ACC still brake and accelerates harder than necessary.
The hood flutter is less, but it is still there.

13,000 lbs in the mountains from Pittsburgh PA to Elk County and back. 2019 6.4 L with 3.73 gears. Average 7.8 miles to the gallon pulling hard and fast averaging 70 miles an hour on mountain roads.

Update on my experience. I’ve been driving a different route with a lot less stop and go, the EVIC has improved to 14.4 mpg. I decided to leave Trip Meter A running without resetting to see the long term average from driving it off the lot new BUT I randomly reset Trip Meter B a week or so ago to see what short term trip results were. It was convenient today that they all were within a few tenths of a mpg when the low fuel light came on, the display showed 47 miles to empty. I drove 351 miles between fill ups and it took 26.19 gallons to top it off. That equates to 13.4 mpg when hand calculating. The previous fill up calculation was 12.8 mpg so that’s a .6 improvement over my last update. A small increase but I’ll take it.
