2019 Truck cap/topper/camper shell thread

They tapped into the harness in the lower driver door pillar for my power door lock wiring.

Then how do they get the wiring to the back? Drill a hole through the floor or what?

I don't really know. They did not drill any holes. The wiring comes up into the tail light hole. I assume they followed the harness to that spot. On my 2016 they tapped into the rear tailgate harness under the truck.

So my used topper is getting painted today and I should be able to pick up on Monday. Question for you guys. Did you or do you disconnect the trucks third brake/ bed light before you put the topper on. I have watched a few videos and some mention doing so and other don’t.

Tossing around the idea of a decked system under the topper. Any of you guys have a long term thought on this setup under a topper?

I plan on running a Softopper over my decked system. If it gets annoying, I can always fold down the topper. I saw another thread that alluded that a sliding deck on top of the decked system was helpful under a topper. That may be another option for you.

I really wish someone would make a half-width decker system. I think I'll need to make my own.

my buddy had a decked in his RSI and while both are nice individually after being around his I would not have both. one or the other for me unless I had a high style topper

Based on how I use my truck, i feel like the decked system would be very useful. The main downside I see is the bed floor will be 1 foot higher off the ground. But, most of the stuff will be in drawers. Question is… will I be able to see/reach in those drawers at 5’10”

yes they pull way out. I had no problem getting stuff out of them and i am about the same height.

I like the decked unit for the cost and overall build quality seems great. That said, I feel the drawer design leaves a ton of empty space compared to traditional rectangle drawers. While something like a truck vault may be more than someone wants to spend I think you get more space, and you can get a lower unit which makes loading on top of the drawers easier, and also means it's easier to sleep in the cap because you can still potentially sit up.

I'm looking at DIYing a drawer system, gonna look at total cost and see how much in materials I'd be into it. They seem like a very straightforward design.

Truckvault also makes a half bed option so you can keep one side open. I think that is a cool idea, especially if you build a folder top for it so you could put a piece of wood across the top when you so desired.

I concur with @jadmt . I'm 5'7 and have no issues. Granted, I only have 35s and my power wagon is not lifted.

i built a decked type system out of plywood in mine. did them quick for like $175 in plywood at a buddy's shop just to see if i liked them and how i'd use them. used it a year and change on fishing trips sleeping in the back. getting a super pacific camper shell in a month or two and ripped those out. convenient for access to things, but i never use 80% of the stuff in there. between under and behind rear seats (mega) there is room for a lot of what was back there.

gonna start clean and figure out a new setup. thinking the engel cooler on slide on one side with some boxes forward of that at the same level to use as a seat/lower sleeping platform, but we'll see how she goes once the pop up is on.

i think the decked set up is fine, but it's over priced if you're not gonna use the waterproof/crush proof part when using with no shell... IMO

too bad you're in GA crawlerdude. my plywood set up is sitting on the side of the house waiting to get cut up and tossed since no one in socal wanted it on CL...

When I looked at the ARE I saw one at least with the wiring coming down on the driver's side rear. They had tied it into the brake light fixture itself. I'm not sure I like that idea with that whole fixture having not just LED bulbs but also cameras or sensors etc. Plus the wires were just sort of exposed there. I read somewhere on here that there is a plug underneath near the spare tire that is brake circuit power. I was going to post this question once I had the truck but now is as good a time as any.

Has anyone found that circuit and connected their canopy brake light to it? It would be a much cleaner install I think then just splicing it into the brake light fixture from inside the bed at the rear of the fixture. We would just need to get from the inside of the canopy underneath the truck. And possibly have to extend the wiring and attach an appropriate plug on the end of it?

Anyone have any knowledge or suggestions about this idea?

Sorry if this has already been posted somewhere but does anyone have a picture of an RSI topper on an a HD Ram? Just got the build date for my pearl white 3500 and I’m trying to decide on a topper. I’ve never seen one in person and I’m curious about the area between the cab and the topper. Most of the pics I can find online are at angles and I can’t really tell if it looks good or weird where cab and topper meet.
