2022 Ram Tow/Trailer Camera Options

Warning - if you order Rambox, there will be NO Trailer Connections in the bed

Since the Limited defaults to Rambox, I doubt you would get the trailer connectors in bed - and the 5th Wheel / Gooseneck pkg is not available unless you Delete Rambox which would presumable get you the bed connectors

And this last is a big problem for many of us. Further the Coax / FAKRA connector apparently does not work well with splitters / splices - so even if you got creative and found correct FAKRA connector for bed, it would present a problem. I cant imagine MOPAR has not got something in work - hopefully sooner rather than later.
Thanks for adding that info, that makes things even more clear for him….and hopefully anyone else in this situation. It is certainly complicated and can easily create an “oops” moment if you aren’t in-the-know. Most salespeople are, unfortunately, very much in the dark on all of this. This forum is worth its weight in gold to anyone ordering a truck.

A lot can be learned from delivered orders compared to info available from official sources.

I suspect even the most knowledgeable sales people get surprised these days - and then there are the less knowledgeable sales people, and worse those who make it up on the fly so as not to be perceived as uninformed.

Neither my salesman nor I knew what connectors would be where when I ordered with Rambox.

Thank you, much appreciated!

Yes, the Limited package indicates it comes with the Digital Rearview Mirror. Really odd that they don't set up the connection for the XH7 camera inside the bed though. I'm a newbie at this, but understand you don't put wires across the tailgate on a 5th wheel. So it looks like I either need to:

A) not purchase the XH7 since I can't plug it in. This would make the Digital Rearview Mirror effectively useless when towing.
B) retrofit the plug from the bumper to a position inside the bed of my new truck. I wonder if anyone has done this?
RLMandich - did anyone answer you on B? I have exactly the same situation and question as you. Seems like Ram didn't really think this through for those of us with 5er.

Agree. Really poor planning. Big problem. Cant believe they arent working on a kit to put in bed.

If I knew that at the time of order I would definitely add it in my build

If you are talking TowMode Camera, it displays in rear view mirror and you should have the coax connector on left side of license plate if you have Digital Rear View Mirror - You might also have 7+12 pin or right of license plate. 12 pin is for either trailer surround or trailer rear camera to play in Uconnect screen (if you have both, you have to choose as you apparently cant use both thru 12 pin at same time.

But you could theoretically add either coax or earlier 12pin camera from MOPAR when shortages are over.

But NO connectors in box if you have RamBox. No problem for bumper pull, but still need to figure how to put connectors in bed if gooseneck or 5th wheel.

RamCares we need an option or a retrofit kit to place a connector in the bed of the truck in order to be able to connect the tow mode digital rearview camera to a gooseneck or 5th wheel trailer without having to run the plug over the tailgate.

Obvious need. Unfortunately i cant find anything and dealer parts dept has no idea. And eTrailer has no idea of anything other than the 7-pin. Hope they come up with factory retrofit soon.

From other earlier posts here the FAKRA coax line is distance limited and not readily friendly to splitting to a 2nd connector.

When I have Laramie Safety Group B selected and then select Tow mode digital camera, the safety group is deselected. The safety group already has the mirror, but what about the camera to go along with it? I hate when they link partial items in packages.

You have to select the “wired tow mode camera” option under safety and security systems in order to get the camera. That is the trailer half of the system. If your truck has the digital rearview mirror you will automatically have the truck half of the system.

The $995 tow mode pkg included both digitsl mirror and camera. Digitsl mirror is already in Safety Group at least on Longhorn. So they are somewhat redundant. There should be a separate tow mode camera only for about $450. Thats what you need to order if you want Safety pkg too

I took my 2020 in for oil change on Thursday. Talked to the parts guy about getting the cameras for after the fact. He said that he didn't have any parts numbers from Strellantis for the 2022's yet and therefore neither the cameras nor the plug ins are really on the trucks. I took him outside and showed him the plug ins on 3 different trucks, explained what each one was supposed to do and he informed that I was an idiot and they didn't exist. I hope if someone on this forum comes up with parts #'s they will share the numbers as well as the dealership they get them from. I will gladly order and have them shipped instead of going thru these fools.
May not exist for an earlier truck. Do you have digital rear view mirror that is required for tow mode coax camera? And for 12 pin connector i believe you need additional module to connect 12 pin camera system to Uconnect even in 2022 that did not come with 12pin. There was an earlier post about adding wiring for 12 pin.

I guess I have to see one with safety group that also has the bumper coax connector. I also want the trailer 360 and aux cameras.

Yes as ACEd mentioned above if you select the tow mode digital rearview package it will come with everything you need. Depending on which trim level you want, there are different ways to get the digital rearview camera and mirror. Just have to be careful because picking certain options can cause you to lose other features (this is explained in detail further back in this thread).

Also to note, as of right now, you can only run ONE camera system at a time through the 12-pin wiring harness so you’ll have to choose EITHER the trailer 360 camera system, or an auxiliary camera system. You can’t run both simultaneously (unfortunately) as of yet. I was bummed to find this out as I had plan to use my trailer 360 system on our horse trailer and then also install an auxiliary camera inside to monitor the horses while driving. Looks like I’ll have to stick with an aftermarket camera and screen system for the inside of the trailer for now. I’m hoping something will develop in the aftermarket world that will let me run both eventually.

With respect to 12 pin trailer camera connection on truck. I did not order this connection but it is on my truck. I tried but it kicked out other options.

Turns out the 12 pin connector on bumper came on my Longhorn with Level 1 pkg in addition to the coax FAKRA connector with my $995 TowMode Digital camera / Digital rear view mirror pkg (No Safety Grp).

If you already have the Digital Rear view mirror you should be able to add the Tow Mode Trailer Camera for about $450 as i recall.

12 pin connector appears to come with the TRUCK 360 view camera system which is part of other packages. And the 12 pin camera system is only viewed in the Uvonnect screen.

As to using it on trailer cameras i did not purchase those options so i can only go by manual and it appears the Trailer 360 is limited to low speed like the TRUCK 360. So its not like an RV system that can be on full time driving down the road.

And because of the 12pin connectors limitations - specifically number of contacts - my understanding is you have to choose between 360 Trailer view and Trailer Rear View.

But i believe you can run the rear view full time and potentially put it inside trailer but you would lose its rear view function in Uconnect screen. Not sure about any other aux cameras but i think you are limited to rear view + either the trailer 360 OR MAYBE 1 other aux camera. And in any case you can use only 1 at a time. Info is confusing at best.

As to the coax Trailer Mode Camera, it too could be put inside or used as a rear view on back of trailer as originally intended. But it appears to be the second camera in that system with the first being the Truck’s digital rear view system in the high mounted brake light. These are selectable but both display only in the Digital Rear View mirror.

So the best option for interior view with rear view might theoretically be to use the Towmode coax as Trailer rear view and the 12 pin single camera inside (assuming the 12 pin rear view can operate full time which i can not answer as i did not get that pkg).

Hope that helps rsther than adding to confusion.

My recollection is you have a Laramie with Safety B which incl Digital rear view? To answer another poster’s question, do you have the coax connector on left of license plate? And you should have 12/7 pin on right with TowTech pkg?

Best, Ed

If you want 12 pin system i think you are going to run into similar conflicting pkg. if you check the extra Trailer Camera wiring it kicks off other pkg that already include Truck Surround View such as the Tow Tech pkg which seems like a better way to go.

I have both coax connector on left side of license plate and 12 pin on right side.

I don’t really care about surround view cameras for trailer, all I want is trailer tow camera in my rearview mirror.

I think that answers Phil T question as to coax connector with Safety Group on Laramie

Once things settle a bit relative to supply/demand, I think you could buy either the coax or the 12pin rear view camera for trailer - and if you are bumper pull, you dont have to deal with my problem of moving wiring to bed. But I would watch this forum and let someone else pioneer the way.
